Be careful what you buy! What you need to look for to find good quality essential oils
By now, we all know essential oils can change your life for the better. But how do we know we’re buying good quality oils? How do we know they aren’t from dodgy sellers who combine essential oils with nut and seed oils or even worse, heavy metals and nasty chemicals?
CPTG Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade is a testing process created by doTERRA to ensure no synthetic ingredients or harmful contaminants are added to the essential oils. doTERRA also put their products and packaging through a sequence of assessments to guarantee an extended and efficient shelf life.
The CPTG Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade quality protocol includes the following tests:
- Organoleptic testing
- Microbial testing
- Gas chromatography
- Mass spectrometry
- Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR)
- Chirality testing
- Isotopic analysis
- Heavy metal testing
Those are the lab tests doTERRA undergoes to ensure we are purchasing the best quality essential oils. Here are a few tips you can try at home to ensure your oils are as authentic as possible.
Appearance:
Put one drop of essential oil on a piece of white paper. Allow it to dry. If an oily ring remains, then unfortunately the oil is not pure! It is most likely combined with vegetable or seed oils.
Purity:
The essential oils label will specify if the oils is 100% pure. If a label does not present this information, it is likely the oil has been altered.
Price:
Although an expensive price tag does not equate to quality, it is imperative we are aware of essential oils accompanied by cheap cheap prices! Quality essential oils often can be costly because of what it takes to make them. You get what you pay for.
Bottle:
Glass is the best way to store essential oils due to the strong chemical compounds decomposing and can then react with the plastic. The glass should also be dark in colour in order to avoid ultraviolet heat.
Touch:
When comparing the touch of vegetable oil and an essential oil, the essential oil should not be fatty, oily or greasy but should feel sheer and slippery on your fingers.
Let’s stay away from the fake essential oils and ensure we are spending our hard earned money on pure products whilst supporting companies that are authentic.
