Episode Seventy Nine: Embracing your unique timeline

During this episode, I chat to Laura about her personal journey to supporting women to embrace their own unique timeline. She shares how she spent sixteen years working in television and the struggles that came with working in a perfect driven industry. She spent so much time cultivating who she had to be in everyone else’s eyes and in turn lost who she really was. Laura shares how she was having success within the industry but personally, she was in her mid-thirties and had never been in a relationship. Which brought through thoughts of questioning what was wrong with her and she felt embarrassed. She lived in fear that people would find out she never had a relationship but in reality, she just hadn’t meant her person yet. She started talking to women about her real experiences and how those pretty pictures on social media aren’t reality. She soon realised how badly we need that to share our experiences to express ourselves and connect with others. Laura left her television career and had no idea what she was going to do but it all fell into place. She now works with women around expectations in society, how to break through those pressures and how to realise how much social norms aren’t the end-all. We need to do what works best for us and our own timeline.

Laura talks about the impact of societal expectations and offers practical tips on how we can create change. Laura shares the common thoughts and feelings that arise from societal expectations like being a failure. Because you don’t have everything when you are ‘supposed’ to which results of thoughts of unworthiness. Laura shares how we don’t have to be fixed, in reality it hasn’t happened yet because it isn’t meant to be. She shares how your life doesn’t look like everyone else’s, give yourself permission to celebrate everything that isn’t always celebrated and remind yourself that there is no one way. Trust your own unique path and everything is happening as it should, trust that process.

Throughout this episode, we discuss ways to unpack and free yourself from societal expectations. Ways that you can start un-developing thought patterns by determining where they are coming from to take away some of their power. We discuss how grief is such an important part of the process to give ourselves the opportunity to grieve what we don’t have or may never have. How you can’t keep moving forward into change unless you acknowledge the loss that is putting you in that position.

Laura says that you can start appreciating your life right now by first understanding that it’s a constant process and a rollercoaster.  Knowing that nothing is going to be perfect, we are changing and evolving each day and understanding why we are feeling this way and where did it come from. Work through grief, starting with some of the tough stuff, acknowledge and sit with what we don’t have to be able to move forward. Finding ways to own the thing that we can control and letting go of the things that we can’t control.

Laura shares helpful tips if you are struggling with judgement from others, ways to stay strong and know your worth and how to celebrate what you have already created in this life.
